Read the guideThe auto model starts with vehicle price and adds estimated sales tax, financed fees and outstanding trade-in debt. It then subtracts trade-in value and your down payment. Enter separately paid fees in the upfront-fee field rather than counting them in financed fees too.
Trade-in equity is the trade-in value minus its remaining debt. Positive equity reduces the new amount borrowed. Negative equity can increase it when the old balance is rolled into the new financing. For example, a $6,000 trade-in with $8,000 still owed contributes $2,000 of negative equity. Compare the calculated principal with your dealer’s itemized financing disclosure.
The entered tax rate applies to price minus your entered eligible tax deduction. A trade-in does not automatically receive a tax credit. Tax rules differ by state and locality, so enter the permitted deduction yourself and confirm the rate with the relevant authority or purchase documents. The model does not cover leases, residual values or state-specific tax rules.
A hypothetical $35,000 vehicle with a $5,000 down payment, $8,000 trade-in, $3,000 trade-in debt, 6% tax on the full price and $500 financed fees leaves $27,600.00 financed. At 6.5% for 60 months, the first debt payment is $540.03 and total interest is $4,801.54.
